Dave Morris

Dave Morris has been a respected figure in the polka music community for over five decades. A self-taught musician from Monongahela, Pennsylvania, Dave first picked up the accordion at age 19, joining his first polka band as a young man eager to play. In the early 1970s, after watching Charlie Tansek perform on the concertina, Dave was so inspired that he purchased one of his own and taught himself to play. That spark of inspiration ignited a lifetime of music.

Dave quickly distinguished himself as one of the first musicians in western Pennsylvania to truly master the Chemnitzer concertina, playing it not merely in a few keys but as a full-range instrument. He was an original member of The Sounds, founded in 1977, and served as their sole concertina player throughout the band’s many years together. Over the course of his career, Dave has performed with a remarkable roster of bands, including The Polka Dynamics, The Invictas, Jimmy Weber and The Sounds, The New Brass, The Dynatones, Eddie Blazonczyk and The Versatones, Vinnie and The New Soundz, The Boys, The NuTones, and Blue Magic.

His artistry is captured on 19 recordings, all performed on the same treasured concertina that has been his musical companion throughout his career. These recordings have earned Dave and his bandmates numerous honors from the International Polka Association and the United States Polka Association, and he was nominated for a Grammy Award two years running with The Sounds. He has appeared on television programs, including Polka Varieties with The Polka Dynamics and Let’s Polka with The Boys. Dave is praised for his distinctive style, tastefully melodic solos, powerful percussive chording, and an artistic flair that lets the unique voice of the concertina shine.

Beyond the stage, Dave dedicated himself to growing and preserving the concertina tradition. He served as a sales representative for Star Concertina, helping put instruments into the hands of players across Pennsylvania and beyond. He has generously taught numerous aspiring concertina musicians, turning many of those teacher–student relationships into lifelong friendships. Dave has been a champion of jam sessions, fostering a warm and welcoming space for beginners and seasoned players alike. He has also shared his music with the broader community through performances at charitable benefits, high school proms, parades, assisted living facilities, and polka cruises, bringing joy to audiences of all ages and walks of life.
